It's possibly the most famous and popular anime ever. "But no, isn't Pokemon, or equivalently spastic kids' shows more popular?"
No.

NGE has been watched by children and adults alike. However, the way this show was developed, seems to be aimed at the older demographic, as this show is so profound in the way it deals with real life issues that most children won't understand.

There are too many too quote here, and even then quoting them doesn't give the justice to the concepts that are planted within the show. You'll just have to see it for yourself.
